5 ways to enjoy Spring in St Davids
The countdown is on till we throw open the doors here at Warpool Court and welcome our first guests of 2017 to St Davids on 1st April. Spring time in North Pembrokeshire is a real treat, and so we thought we’d put together some ideas to help you make the most of your stay here.
Wild flowers on the coast path
The coastal geology and clean air out here on the St Davids peninsula make for a great environment for stunning Spring flowers. As the colder days of winter become a distant memory and the sun starts to warm our shores, there’s a riot of Spring colour to be seen on the landscapes around the hotel. Coconut-scented Gorse (it really does smell of coconut!), splashes of primrose, violets peeking out from the hedgerows and banks that line our country lanes; Campions, Queen Anne’s Lace… Pembrokeshire is also home to several protected species, including Early Gentian and Lady’s Slipper. You can access the Pembrokeshire Coast Path direct from the hotel grounds, so bring your walking boots and enjoy this natural canvas of wild flowers.
With St Davids Cathedral on our doorstep, for those who want to make more of Easter than an overload of chocolate there’s the opportunity to experience the celebrations in this beautiful Norman Cathedral. Elsewhere, you’ll find a number of Easter themed events taking place nearby. Just next door to the Cathedral, the Bishops Palace will be holding a traditional Easter Hunt in the grounds. This is based on the Easter Feast held by Bishop Swinfield of Hereford in 1270 and participants will have to find 11 items that make up the menu.
Have an Epic Adventure
Many of our local adventure companies operate all year round. With April comes a renewed desire for many of us to get out an about, so why not book yourself in for an adventure while you stay with us? Locally based Sea Kayak Guides are just one of the companies offering kayaking adventures – or give coasteering a go. This is a brilliant and exhilarating way to see our coastline in a different light. Celtic Quest Coasteering run coasteering adventures from Abereiddy, just up the coast from us at St Davids, and will put together an adventure for people of all ages and abilities from about 8 years old and above.
Spring is traditionally a time of new life – think lambs, Easter chicks, that sort of thing. Pembrokeshire has many attractions where you can get up close with the animals – some native, some from further afield. Folly Farm is not only host to a wealth of traditional ‘farm’ animals – goats, ponies, sheep, pigs, rabbits, it’s also home to ‘the Pride of Pembrokeshire’, the only giraffes in Wales, and the critically endangered Eastern Black Rhino. Even without visiting somewhere like Folly Farm, you'll be amazed at the widlife you can encounter here as you go about the business of having a relaxing break. You may spot dolphins and porpoises from the coast path, head to Skomer Island for a spot of puffin spotting, or simply enjoy the wild birds that fill our skies.
Discover the Legends of Pembrokeshire
2017 is the Year of Legends here in Wales . Warpool Court is, itself, steeped in history – something you’ll discover from the moment you step through the doors. St Davids too, is full of legend: home of Wales’ patron saint, from the hotel, it’s only a short way to discover St Non’s Well, reputed to have sprung forth when he was born. North Pembrokeshire has a wealth of sites of historical interest, from St Dogmaels Abbey in the northernmost corner of the county, castles and royal connections at Cilgerran, Pembroke and Carew (to name a few), Neolithic sites in the Preseli Mountains and a rich maritime and coastal heritage to discover.
