4 Great Pembrokeshire Gardens to Visit This Summer

We’re well known for our stunning grounds, so we like to think we know a thing or two about beautiful gardens! Our Italianate terraces, manicured lawns, secluded corners and meandering tracks winding their way down to the stunning Pembrokeshire Coast Path are a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the beauty of St Davids Head. For plant lovers, Warpool Court Hotel is not only a great place to stay but is the perfect base from which to explore some of our lovely local gardens, here in North Pembrokeshire. From smaller, homely gardens to the more stately, summer is the season to see Pembrokeshire horticulture in full bloom.

Dyffryn Fernant Gardens

Three miles north of Fishguard under the wild Preseli uplands you’ll find Dyffryn Fernant, six acres of tranquillity in the picturesque Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Sympathetically planted in perfect harmony with their surroundings, the gardens blend into the spectacular mountains and valleys beyond. Each area is planted in a different style, including an ornamental grass field, a courtyard and an unusual bog garden, so there’s plenty of variety. With no shortage of idyllic spots to stop and enjoy the peace and quiet, admire the spectacular views or read one of the books from their wonderful library, it’s a lovely place to while away the time. They also have self-service tea and coffee and a picnic area available so you can enjoy a quick cuppa or dine al fresco.

Penlan Uchaf Gardens

Take a trip along the charming Gwaun Valley and you’ll come across the wonderful Penlan Uchaf gardens. The beautifully landscaped three acre gardens of herbaceous borders, raised herb gardens, alpine beds, ponds and streams surround a working farm with scenic views across the ancient Preseli hills. Not only is it a lovely garden to visit in its own right but it’s a great place for walkers with its nearby trails meandering through woodland and alongside mountain streams.  The farm has its own shop where you can buy their wonderful fresh produce and you can also sample delicious homemade fare in their cosy tea room.

Hilton Court Gardens

Eleven miles south of St Davids, Hilton Court Gardens are located in a sheltered valley in beautiful St Bride’s Bay. The unique microclimate makes this eight acre garden a delightful place to get stuck in to a bit of pond dipping or wander down the shady woodland paths that thread through the landscape. If you’re lucky, around the next corner you may find one of 3 charming little houses dotted around the grounds for the children to enjoy. A prominent garden feature is the solar dome which traps the warm Pembrokeshire sun - the perfect environment for semi tropical plants and a lovely balmy spot for visitors on cooler days. If you need refreshments after all that adventuring, the restaurant and woodland cafe provide plenty of choice and the Victorian courtyard is a great place to enjoy a snack or drink on a sunny day.

Picton Castle Gardens

Twenty miles from St Davids near the town of Haverfordwest, lies the13th century Picton Castle. Surrounded by impressive 40 acres gardens with beautiful views across the Pembrokeshire countryside, this stunning castle is one of the finest stately homes in Wales. With its ancient towering woodlands, lily covered ponds, rare plant collections and beautiful walled gardens it’s a delight for green-fingered visitors but is equally popular with the less horticulturally-minded! A great choice for a family day out, there’s plenty at Picton to keep the little ones occupied – as well as acres of room to run off that excess energy there’s an adventure playground, jungle gardens and maze to explore. Children can also take part in their own exciting Woodland Trail where they find clues, solve riddles and (more importantly in the eyes of most children) win a prize!  When you need a pit-stop, you can head to the lovely courtyard cafe for a bite to eat.

Our grounds are testament to our love of a good garden, so when you’ve finished exploring Warpool Court, we hope you enjoy the other great gardens of Pembrokeshire during your stay with us!
