Mornings With Wendy Brandon Handmade Preserves: Warpool Court Hotel’s Peter Trier Spies Scrumptious Goodies
“If you love jams, jellies, marmalades, chutneys a visit to Wendy Brandon Handmade Preserves is a must!” suggests Warpool Court Hotel owner Peter Trier.
A visit here is a great addition to your itinerary when you’re travelling around north Pembrokeshire. Started in 1985, the family-led business moved to its current home, an 18th century farm just off the B4332 near the village of Boncath, in 1992.
A morning visit is usually recommended as this is the time when most of the cooking takes place. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to see the preserves being made and taste some of the delicious varieties. The fruit is carefully hand-cut, and the jars are hand-filled and capped in the traditional way.
Although it’s a small company in an old corn mill, the products Wendy Brandon makes travel as far as France, Japan and beyond. The products grace some of the finest shops and tables in the world and there are more than 200 varieties of preserves - often as a result of specific requests from chefs and private customers.
You can make a special request and, as long as Wendy can get the ingredients, she can make special preserves for you. You can even order and send a mail order gift to locations throughout the U.K.
Wendy says that “everything is made by hand – exactly as you would make it in your own kitchen – given time and inclination … We have kept to our original concept of luxury handmade preserves so that everything is still cooked by domestic methods”.
While you’re here, you’ll want to check in with the animals: 2 working Iron Age pigs – Gertrude and Daisy, and a group of Indian Runner ducks. Iron Age pigs are a cross between European wild bore and Tamworth of the English Midlands. You can also take a look around the garden area and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding woodland and streams that used to power the mill.
Once you’ve had your fill of exploring north Pembrokeshire, you can pop back for a round or two of tennis at Warpool Court Hotel, then relax on the terrace with a drink before making your way to a wonderful dinner at the Sea View Restaurant.
If you’re planning a holiday in Pembrokeshire this year, contact Warpool Court Hotel to book one of our luxury rooms or stay in our private, self-catering Garden Cottage. We look forward to seeing you soon!
