Surf’s Up at Newgale: Warpool Court Hotel’s Peter Trier Suggests Bucket List Activity
"With nearly a three-mile stretch of beach and good swells from the Atlantic, Newgale is the ideal place to tick one more thing off your bucket list: learning how to surf!" says Warpool Court Hotel owner Peter Trier.
You don’t need to come prepared either. Local surf shops just up from the beach offer everything you need to get started, from boards and wetsuits to surfing lessons.
Still within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, Newgale sits on the boundary between Welsh and English-speaking Pembrokeshire. Newgale is one of Wales’ 40 Blue Flag beaches, so you can rest assured that you’ll be surfing in waves with great water quality and walking along safe, clean sands.
Newgale is a little different from what you might expect on your average beach - to reach the flat sandy area in summer, visitors walk on wood walkways across a wall of large pebbles (shingle), washed into place by a storm in 1859.
The beach is a particular favourite with families, with safe, child-friendly shallows to paddle and play in.
Newgale is famed for its great surfing conditions. Time your visit right and you can catch a wave or two as they surge in from the Atlantic. On particularly breezy days, you'll want to bring along a wind-break. If you visit at low tide, you can see the remains of 11,000 year old trees in the sand or walk along to the cosy cove of Cwm Mawr. Make sure that you know the tide times to be sure you don't get stranded by the rising water. At the south end of the beach, you can go exploring with a walk-through caves and sheltered bays.
On the hills above the beach you can find historic ruins including a brick stack, the remains of the Trefrane colliery, and a lime kiln.
