The Pembrokeshire Coast – BBC Countryfile Magazine’s Holiday Destination of the Year!

It’s official, the Pembrokeshire Coast is the BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards Holiday Destination of the Year 2018! Our spectacular county came out on top after 30,000 Countryfile readers chose their favourite places to holiday throughout the UK which is a huge achievement considering such stiff competition from other lovely locations like the Isle of Wight, Speyside, Suffolk and the Forest of Bowland.

Although Pembrokeshire regularly features in the top British holiday destinations (and rightly so), it’s particularly special to win the votes of people who are true connoisseurs of the countryside! With 186 miles of stunning coastline, activities galore, incredible wildlife and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s no wonder Pembrokeshire is such a popular place to get away from it all. There’s something for everyone here in west Wales, whether you’re after peace and quiet or action and adventure!

Life in the Slow Lane

We like to take things nice and easy in here in north Pembrokeshire, so we certainly enjoy a more relaxed pace of life than most other parts of the UK - a fact that didn’t go unnoticed by Countryfile’s readers and judges! Competition judge Miranda Krestovnikoff said:

“Wildlife, wildlife, wildlife. Plus, stunning coastline, incredible birdlife, beautiful beaches that aren’t as busy as they are in Cornwall - it’s just wall to wall wonder.”

Rarely crowded, even at the height of the summer season, there’s plenty of space to explore in relative peace or to just sit back, unwind and recharge your batteries. If taking time out from the hurly burly of life is what you’re after, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful places to while away the hours in a peaceful daze. From leisurely walks along the stunning coast path and discovering ancient hilltop burial mounds, to lazing on a warm, sandy beach or feasting on locally caught fish in a quaint harbour town, there’s enough to occupy you without wearing you out!

Adventure and Discovery

Of course, even though a bit of peace and quiet is rather lovely, some like to punctuate it with a good dollop of action and adventure! Trying something new or daring is what many of us do when we’re vacationing and seems that lots of Countryfile voters fondly remember holidays in Pembrokeshire for that very reason, including judge Miranda Krestovnikoff who says:

“Pembrokeshire has a really special place in my heart as it’s where I had my first ever scuba dive.”

As well as scuba diving, you can also try sailing, kayaking, surfing, body-boarding, rock climbing, horse-riding and kite-boarding (to name just a few activities), and if throwing yourself off rocks into the swirling surf is your idea of heaven, the north Pembrokeshire area is one of the best places in Britain to go coasteering.

And if all that isn’t quite exciting enough, why not strap on a life-jacket and bounce across the waves to one of our islands on one of the many available boat trips? Havens for huge colonies of seabirds (including that fantastic little creature, the puffin), these islands are also home to seals which you can see basking on the rocky shores or peering suspiciously at you from the water. It’s not unusual for pods of dolphins to swim and leap alongside the boats, while basking sharks and porpoises are also common visitors to our waters.

Wonderful Warpool

At Warpool Court Hotel, the feedback from our guests echoes the sentiments expressed by the people who voted for Pembrokeshire to be the Countryfile Holiday Destination of the Year 2018. Comments from some of our wonderful guests include:

“Walk out of the back door and in minutes you can be hiking along the Wales coastline. Walk out of the front, and in a few minutes, you can be in the historic city of St. Davids and enjoy a visit to the beautiful cathedral.”

“It’s oh so quiet there, the ideal place to get away from it all…”

“We have all benefited hugely from the sea air, the coastal walks, the wonderful views…”

" The most perfect place in the world."
