The St Davids Cathedral Festival: The Highlight of Pembrokeshire’s Musical Calendar

Although Pembrokeshire has its fair share of musical highlights throughout the year, the St Davids Cathedral Festival is definitely our favourite here at Warpool Court Hotel. As long-standing patrons, we always look forward to the end of May when we can watch top-class musicians delighting audiences in one of West Wales’ most iconic buildings.

The festival has been going from strength to strength for almost 40 years, and this year will bring the usual mix of classic and contemporary music to appreciative audiences from 24th – 31st May.

Situated just a short walk from the hotel, St Davids Cathedral is an outstanding music venue. Nestled in a gentle dip in the landscape, the cathedral was built in the 12th century on the site of an ancient monastery founded by St David himself. The combination of spectacular Norman architecture and divine acoustics of the building create a unique atmosphere, beloved by the music enthusiasts who flock to our little city each year.

Concerts and choirs

The 2019 St Davids Cathedral Festival Programme certainly doesn’t disappoint, with a variety of artists and musical styles on show. As a venue with naturally strong ties to choral and organ music, the schedule includes celebrity and young organist recitals, as well as choral fanfares and performances by the St Davids Cathedral Choir and the Haverfordwest Male Voice Choir.

There are also classical performances from violinist Jack Liebeck, the Marsyas Trio and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to look forward to. For lovers of folk music, there’s the chance to enjoy a performance by renowned bilingual Welsh band Calan, winners of the International Folk Band Award. And as the Young Musician of Dyfed also has a spot on the schedule, the festival gives audiences a great opportunity to see the up and coming Welsh musical stars of tomorrow.

Go exploring in Britain’s smallest city

The best thing about having a music festival in St Davids is that you can go exploring before, after or between performances. Small and friendly, St Davids is more like a village than a city. You can wander away from the Cathedral down winding streets boasting lovely cafes, pubs, art galleries and local craft shops. And don’t miss the opportunity to explore the imposing ruins of the medieval Bishop’s Palace next to the cathedral itself.

The town and cathedral are also within easy walking distance of Warpool Court Hotel, which means you can simply saunter there and back without having to worry about parking (or not being able to enjoy a drink or two)! You can also treat yourself to a meal in our Sea View Restaurant to help set you up for an afternoon or evening’s entertainment at the festival. And when you’re exhausted by all the fun you’ve had, you can relax and enjoy the sea or country views from one of our 22 luxury rooms.
